European Research Project ExtreMat started on 1st of December 2004

After nearly three years of preparation, the transnational European research project “New Materials for Extreme Environments” – acronym “ExtreMat” – started on 1st of December 2004. ExtreMat is an Integrated Project funded by the European Commission under the 6th Framework Programme within the thematic priority “Nanotechnologies and nano-sciences, knowledge-based multifunctional materials and new production processes and devices”.

Coordinated by the Max Planck Institute of Plasma Physics in Garching, Germany, 38 partners in 12 European countries will jointly work on the creation of new multifunctional materials for use under extreme conditions – like a combination of extremely high temperatures, heat fluxes, mechanical loads, chemical attacks or radiation.

ExtreMat will run for 5 years and has a volume of about 35 million Euro. 17.4 million Euro will be granted by the European Union, the other part is provided by the project partners from their own funds. In total the project will mobilize about 230 person years of research work.

This research efforts shall result in a generation of new commercial materials and multi-materials components and the corresponding crosscutting processing technologies. The availability of this new materials and compounds will give the European industry a decisive technological lead in the world market.
